Empowering Accountability Through Data Thanks to the EU Pollinator Hub

In preparation for the EU Election 2024, BeeLife created the BeeChoherent Score for Members of the European Parliament (MEPs). The score is based on MEPs' voting behaviours on crucial legislative proposals for bee health and the protection of pollinators in general. The BeeCoherent score helps experts and the public better assess MEPs' standing and coherence on pollinator protection. The BeeCoherent tool required integrating and evaluating data on voting behaviour at the European Parliament, a task made possible by The EU Pollinator Hub.

The EU Pollinator Hub is not just a tool but a collaborative initiative that aims to play a pivotal role in the conservation of pollinators across Europe. It serves as a central repository for comprehensive data on legislative actions, scientific research, citizen observations, and policy developments related to pollinator health. By integrating diverse data sources, the EU Pollinator Hub fosters a sense of inclusion and shared responsibility, aiming Pollinator Hub to promote informed decision-making and the implementation of effective policies to safeguard pollinators.

The BeeCoherent Score is an applied result of the EU Pollinator Hub, achieved through:

Data Integration: The EU Pollinator Hub centralised and integrated extensive data on MEPs' voting records. This included crucial votes on legislative proposals impacting bee health and pollinator protection. The centralised data repository created by the Hub formed the backbone of the BeeCoherent Score, ensuring its accuracy and comprehensiveness.

Data Assessment: The EU Pollinator Hub's rigorous evaluation process ensured that the score reflected significant and impactful legislative actions. This thorough analysis provided a reliable measure of each MEP's commitment to pollinator protection and evidenced trends among political groups and member states.

Transparency and Accessibility: The EU Pollinator Hub's dedication to openness and accessibility ensured that the BeeCoherent Score data was available for public scrutiny. Individual voting behaviour has been condensed in the BeeCoherent score, upscaling public visibility and accountability of MEPs.

As voters made their choices in the EU Election 2024, the BeeCoherent Score emerged as a crucial tool for assessing the environmental commitments of MEP candidates. By providing a clear and comprehensive measure of MEPs' voting behaviours on pollinator protection, the score not only empowered voters but also made them feel responsible for making informed decisions, ensuring that those elected are truly dedicated to safeguarding pollinators.
